This mega initiative, involving an investment of approximately ₹150 billion (around $1.7 billion), marks a significant step towards stabilizing and boosting energy supply in Northeast India.The company has secured a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) for an initial 500 MW of energy storage capacity as part of the overall 2,700 MW project. This capacity was awarded at an annual tariff of ₹10.3 million (~$116,200) per megawatt for 40 years from the commercial operation date, setting the stage for a long-term energy solution to meet regional demands.Pumped storage projects are essential components of modern energy grids. They work by pumping water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir during periods of low electricity demand, storing energy in the form of gravitational potential. When electricity demand peaks, the stored water is released back through turbines to generate power. This method not only balances grid load but also enhances the integration of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which are variable by nature.AGEL plans to leverage advanced technologies to optimize energy storage, improve grid stability, and effectively manage electricity demand during peak hours.
