Coal Energy is a form of non-renewable energy produced by burning coal, a fossil fuel formed from the remains of ancient plants that were buried and subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. It is one of the most widely used energy sources in the world, particularly for electricity generation and industrial processes.
When coal is burned in power plants, it produces heat that converts water into steam. This steam drives turbines connected to generators, producing electricity. Coal has been a dominant energy source because it is abundant, relatively inexpensive, and can generate large amounts of power.
However, coal energy has significant environmental impacts. Burning coal releases carbon dioxide (CO₂), a major greenhouse gas contributing to climate change, as well as pollutants like sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and particulate matter that cause air pollution and health problems. Mining coal also damages ecosystems and landscapes.
Today, while coal continues to supply a large share of global energy, many countries are reducing dependence on it in favor of cleaner, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power.
