ArcelorMittal to Invest $900 Million in Three Renewable Energy Projects Across India

ArcelorMittal, the global steel giant, has announced a major green expansion plan in India with an investment of $900 million spread across three large-scale renewable energy projects. These projects, located in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, will add 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar and wind capacity to India’s growing renewable energy portfolio. This move marks a significant milestone in ArcelorMittal’s strategy to decarbonize its global steel operations and align with India’s mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.Expanding India’s Green Power BaseAccording to the company, the new projects will be commissioned over the next few years, doubling ArcelorMittal’s renewable capacity in India—from 1 GW to 2 GW. Once operational, these projects will supply clean electricity to AMNS India, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel.Project OverviewMaharashtra Solar Project

ArcelorMittal plans to set up a 36 MW solar power plant in Amravati, Maharashtra. The project, expected to be completed by the first half of 2027, will directly supply renewable electricity to the company’s steel operations in India.Rajasthan Solar-Storage Hybrid

The second project will be developed in Bikaner, Rajasthan, featuring a 400 MW solar farm integrated with 500 MWh of battery energy storage. This facility is designed to ensure a consistent power supply and is targeted for commissioning by June 2028.Gujarat Integrated Renewable Facility

The third and largest project will come up in Bhachau, Gujarat, combining 250 MW of wind power, 300 MW of solar power, and 300 MW of battery storage. It aims for completion by early 2028 and will serve as a fully integrated renewable hub.A Step Toward Cleaner Steel ProductionThe power generated from these renewable facilities will cater to AMNS India’s Hazira steel plant in Gujarat, meeting up to 35% of its electricity demand. Additionally, ArcelorMittal noted that AMNS India is already developing another 550 MW hybrid renewable project at Bhachau, which will cut 0.9 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.Together, the existing and upcoming projects are projected to reduce carbon emissions by as much as 4 million tonnes annually, giving a major boost to sustainable steelmaking in India.Driving India’s Energy TransitionArcelorMittal’s move aligns strongly with India's vision for a clean energy future and highlights the increasing integration of industrial giants into the renewable energy ecosystem. This investment not only strengthens India’s position as a global leader in green manufacturing but also showcases how corporate-led renewable initiatives can accelerate the country’s progress toward sustainable growth. As ArcelorMittal continues to expand its renewable portfolio—both in India and globally—it sets a new benchmark for industrial decarbonization in heavy manufacturing sectors.
